In 2001, Mount Holly formed a partnership with the dog organization Service Dogs of America. This has allowed our children the opportunity to participate in dog trials and gain national acclaim for their training abilities, as well as broaden interest and acceptance in the growing field of handicapped assistance dog training programs. It has also allowed handicapped and special needs individuals the opportunity to train and show dogs. SDA specializes in training protection dogs, assistance/companion dogs, and basic obedience dogs, as well as search and rescue. Their union with the United Kennel Club has allowed SDA participants to get their dogs titled by the UKC in all of the above areas, a feat we ourselves have achieved with several of our Shepherds!
Bill Finks, our senior certified dog trainer, is the president of the North Carolina Service Dogs of America Club in Hayesville, North Carolina. This happens to be the only club that specializes in using special needs individuals as dog trainers!!
